The quiet before the Storm... |
Getting back to our last anchorage-Koh Muk and the scary Emerald Cave! At Koh Muk, the anchorage was supposed to be a muddy bottom, which is good for anchoring in.
However, we could only find rock and murky water; and feeling uncomfortable about
these conditions- we took Micah around the corner. There too was a little nerve-wracking as we had towering cliff faces and huge rocks jutting out from the sea, on either side of us. But, it was a beautiful place to spend two nights.
Micah snuggled in nicely between the cliffs! |
Our first night in this anchorage, the wind started to blow and as we were worried about waking up to find ourselves being dashed in the dark against rocks, we decided to do nightwatch between Brent and myself.
One of the best sunsets so far on the Island of Koh Muk
The stars were out and although the wind howled, I let Brent sleep as he was exhausted. So until 4am I danced in the cockpit to my cd player and got creative with my photos on my laptop:)
Me...trying to find the beast.. in me to get thru the tunnel.. |
The next morning Brent insisted we all pile into and onto all of the floating craft and paddle ourway around the corner to the entrance to the Emerald Cave!!!
Entering the Emerald cave means ducking into a small cave that roars! |
Brent,Charlotte (Brents mom) and myself- sat very carefully::) in the yellow paddleski designed for maximum two! It immediately filled up to the brim with seawater and just the slightest lean either way would have toppled us! We did not want to fall in as there were many large jellyfish with long tails in the water! ( we recently found out that a tourist here died from one of these jellies!)
Caden, who desperately wanted to go with Brent and I as he was petrified of the jelly fish, was forced to paddle on his little malibu and Cally and Cody went on a surfboard and mali while Darren paddled the Fenn paddleski (also requires skill to stay in it:) )
After a lot of commotion, what with Charl getting cramp in her feet and Caden crying all the way-hysterically; we got to the cave entrance.
The courageous ones:) |
To get into this cave, one had to duck down quite low to the surface of the ocean and then you popped into a luminous green glowing watery cave. As the water sucked in and out, the air sucked through as well making a frightening roaring sound that sounded like a tidal wave was going to come shooting out of the tunnel!
"What is there to be scared of?It is only an 80m underground watery ocean tunnel we have to go through..." |
Up to this point I was still hoping that I would face my terror of small dark wet spaces and just mentally break my fear barriers and go through with it:)
My hysteria had a ripple effect and Charlotte suddenly thought we were going to all be sucked up and smashed into the rocky walls!
The idea of once getting through 80metres of pitch darkness with cave walls closing in all around one's head and deep dark water up to your chin!!! Then the destination of a beautiful hong with palms and a white beach with turquoise green water-sounded quite appealing:)
No waves in Thailand so just to let Brent dream... |
I had just started to feel my own hysteria start to well up, when Charl lost it completely and started yellng and paddling away from the cave! She was cursing and smacking me with her paddle as she furiously back-pedalled her way away from the cliff wall.
Brent was laughing so much that he toppled in ( and unbeknownst to us all , he lost his expensive sunglasses!)......
