Sailing into the Unknown...10/9/2010

Today has been a beautiful day! How can we be so luck?
We are in the middle of the Indian Ocean sailing across the Straits of Mallacca, 20 nautical miles east of Sumatra. It is the busiest shipping lane in the the world and we -all 15 x9m of Micah- have to cross this expanse of water to get to surfing paradise-Indo. It is very busy. Huge bulky tankers charging and chugging stubbornly on their paths, leave us turning politely to starboard to stay clear of their razorsharp bows. The autopilot is causing havoc with our afternoon shade as it swerves us along in a zigzag path fighting against powerful currents. The meandering snail trails are all that is left to remind us of the cargo ships that have  passed. It must be about 6pm and the sun is setting to our right.
It lures me temptingly with its golden arm as it links itself to our boat. I almost feel like stepping off the side and gliding across its fiery path on the waters surface, just to stay connected to its warm embrace and the memory of a scorching day of perfection. As yet another ship crosses our bow, it sneeringly sends two large waves towards us. (apparently it was the meeting of two powerful currents), Micah dipped into the first and slammed into the 2nd spraying the ocean over a few of us unsuspecting family members and pouring salt water into our open hatches!! Lucky for us all-my bed is dry but the skipper Louie is not as lucky:(...
